PICTURE CATCH UP DEUX: La Canterra

Favorite things from our Sisters' Getaway to San Antonio: The cheese and fruit platter that awaited us, for no apparent reason; the darling leaf-shaped soaps and other little luxuries in our bathroom; the view out over my sisters' toes as we sunbathed or sat in the hot tub; and of course, winning at Shanghai (our favorite card game). Didn't get a picture of that last one - I was too busy scooping up my winnings. Should have quit while I was ahead.

Used to play Shanghai all the time, wonder if it's the same in CA as in TX.
Just received my package and had to say thanks a bunch. The whole box was perfumed with the spices, which should be divine in a frittata. Can't wait to the try the coffee, the journal's beautiful and now I have something to read when I finish Diana Gabaldon's new book.

I learned how to play Shanghai in Indonesia, and adore it, but rarely get to play cause I hated having to teach it to people from scratch every time we moved. Is your version kind of like gin rummy, but you save different things in each of six rounds? If so, we have to teach some more people to play when you move here, so we can have an occasional Shanghai party. It's much more interesting than Bunco, but not near as stressful as Bridge!

Glad your package got there OK. By the way, I have adored both of the books you recommended to me - the one about the plague, and The 19th Wife. How's the new Gabaldon? I would rank that first book in her time-travel series as one of the top ten page-turners in all my years of reading!

Sounds like the same Shanghai: gets progressively more difficult, one set of three, one run of four, etc, etc until the entire hand has to be composed of what you're collecting. If that's it, we'll need a brief reminder and you'll have at least two -- The husband and I used to play with another couple.
I've just barely cracked the new Gabaldon, by the time I get there I should have a better handle on whether or not it will stand up with the others.
Did I mention Water for Elephants? That was another amazing book.
