I'm with you on your wish list. I absolutely love Le Creuset dutch ovens. I have a little one - about 4 qts - but I want the great big giant one - 7 1/2 quarts. Ask me what I would ever do with a pot that big, go on, ask me. Answer - not a clue. Just me and my hubby and youngest son who's not around for dinner that much. But I WANT it.

I'm the same way - I've been fighting with myself, trying to justify it for years. I finally convinced myself when I gathered up all the fancy silver and crystal serving pieces that I never use, and took them to a consignment store. My mom kept saying I would be glad I had them, once I "matured", but hey, ain't gonna happen. Whenever I entertain, it's usually a soup, stew or braise, served buffet style, and a beautiful enameled dutch oven would be PERFECT!

I picked up a Le Creuset *wannabe* at Target, and a nice big one by Tramatina at H-E-B - about 6 1/2 quarts that one. But I still lust after that mother-of-all-pots, the 7 1/2 qt LC. Every time I see Ina Garten's sitting out on her stove, because heaven knows you can't just stick that fabulous pot in a closet somewhere, I point it out to my husband. After so many years, he knows to just nod and agree that life can never really be complete without a pot big enough swim in.

I've been weighing the pros and cons of settling for a wannabe. Years ago I had something similar, and it seemed to chip fairly easily. Have you had any trouble with yours? It's the same way with my dishes. I've bought lots of Fiesta look-alikes, and they all have big chips with white showing through, but my real Fiesta doesn't have a single one - and we are TOUGH on dishes!

They aren't too bad. Not quite as heavy as the original, and the Tramatina doesn't have enamel on the bottom so I have to be careful to dry it really well. But as I said, I don't cook as much as I used to. My oldest son joined the Marines 4 years ago and my grocery bill was suddenly cut in half. I now know the REAL reason our defense budget is so high - they've got to FEED these kids. Sooo, I've only used them a few times each. My husband is after me to get rid of so many of my kitchen things because he never sees me use them. What he doesn't understand is that, when I DO need a nice, big heavy pot, nothing else will do, even if its only a couple of times a year.
